7 Steps to a Healthier, Stronger Heart

Ancient mythologies from various countries see the heart as the seat of emotion. We are ruled by the heart. It was believed by ancient Egyptians to house the soul and mind of a person.

The heart often overrules the head even though we now know that it is the head, or the brain, that controls the inner workings of the body. It was the heart of a man that was judged as to his innocence or guilt.

It is still the heart that determines a lot about a person, namely their health. In reality, the heart is associated with emotional states but has more to do with keeping you upright than how you feel.

12 Indispensable Mindful Living Tools

By Leo Babauta

“The focus of my life in recent months has been living mindfully, and while I don’t always remember to do that, I have learned a few things worth sharing.”

“The first is a mindful life is worth the effort. It’s a life where we awaken from the dream state we’re most often submerged in — the state of having your mind anywhere but the present moment, locked in thoughts about what you’re going to do later, about something someone else said, about something you’re stressing about or angry about. The state of mind where we’re lost in our smartphones and social media.”

“It’s worth the effort, because being awake means we’re not missing life as we walk through it. Being awake means we’re conscious of what’s going on inside us, as it happens, and so can make more conscious choices rather than acting on our impulses all the time.”

“The second thing I’ve learned is that we forget. We forget, over and over, to be awake. And that’s OK. Being mindful is a process of forgetting, and then remembering. Repeatedly. Just as breathing is a process of exhaling, and then inhaling, repeatedly.”

“The third is that mindful living isn’t just one thing. It’s not just meditation. Nor is it just focusing on the sensations around you, right now in this moment. I’ve found mindful living to be a set of very related tools, perhaps all different ways of getting at the same thing, but each useful in its own regard.”

Aspartame

Aspartame is a nasty chemical that’s sold as a zero-calorie healthy sweetener. But did you know that it’s technically not calorie-free? Not a lot, only about 4 calories per gram. [1] That isn’t a lot, and it’s not a big deal. But it’s one weird fact you probably didn’t know about aspartame. Let’s take a look at a few other points about aspartame that rarely get discussed.

Reading an Ear Reflexology Chart

Originally posted here: wikihow

The reflexology points on a physical ear chart are located on the ear lobe, the outer canal area and the outer part of the ear that is located just above the ear lobe.

Get an ear reflexology chart online or refer to one in a book.

Take a few moments to study the chart. You will see a logical pattern of reflex points located on the different sections of the ear. The reflexology points are located on the outer ear and the outer ear canal area, as well as on the ear lobe. The reflex points for your organs are located on the inner area of the ear canal

Look at the chart to see which areas of your ear to press or massage that coincide with areas of your body in which you are experiencing difficulty. If you have discomfort or pain in your shoulder, for example, you would press an area on your outer ear. The chart indicates that that reflex spot is just about directly across from your ear canal.

Reading an Emotional Ear Reflexology Chart

Most of the reflex points on the emotional ear chart are located along the outer rim of the ear and on the ear lobe.

Look for emotional ear reflex points on a regular physical ear chart. Sometimes both aspects are combined on one chart.

  1. Determine which emotions you are interested in working with. The reflex points for treating depression and anxiety, for example, are located on the upper part of your outer ear.
Find the reflex points for expansive, spiritual emotions on the outer part of your ear lobe.

EditTips

  • Don’t worry if you are unsure of where one reflex point ends and another begins. The ears are small and you are bound to press the correct reflex spot if you perform an overall ear massage.
  • Find the largest ear chart you can. There are hundreds of reflex points located in a very small area so a large wall chart works best for clarity.

EditWarnings

  • The points for ear reflexology are similar to, but not identical to those in auricular therapy, which is also known as ear acupuncture. Be sure you are referring to an ear reflexology chart and not an ear acupuncture chart.

5 Natural Headache Beaters By Matt Jackson

http://www.healthypages.net/

Headaches and migraines can be caused by any number of factors but they all have one thing in common –  without an effective cure they can bring your life to a grinding and painful halt. This guide is meant for  those who don’t wish to take prescription or over the counter drugs and would rather use natural remedies  and healing techniques to cure their headaches.

Headache

Headache (Photo credit: Lel4nd)

Care should always be taken when looking at homeopathic or any other alternative remedies to ensure that  they won’t interact with medication you are currently taking and, of course, to make sure they have the  desired effect. However, what works for one person won’t necessarily work for the next so experiment to  find the best cure for you.

Aromatherapy

There are a number of different ways to use aromatherapy Among the most effective application methods  for headaches are the use of candles, oils and massage oils. Eucalyptus, lavender and sandlewood have  proven to be particularly effective at combating migraines and other forms of headache. You should avoid  the temptation to buy cheap products because often they contain very little of the actual ingredient you  actually want and supplement this with chemicals that could well worsen your headache.

Feverfew

Feverfew

Feverfew (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Feverfew has recently become an incredibly popular method to combat headaches and, in particular, migraines. The active component in feverfew is parthenolide that is becoming increasingly popular with researchers and physicians alike because it has shown promising signs of fighting Leukemia and other more serious complaints. Feverfew acts as an anti-inflammatory and as well as preventing the onset of migraines  it can also help combat a sensitivity to light and nauseous feelings.

Research is still ongoing and, as such, it is difficult to give guidance with regards to the amount to take. Common side effects include a sore throat and mouth and skin rash if large quantities are taken. Recommendations range from 100mg to 200mg per day; any more is not advised. Feverfew capsules are available but many migraine relief tablets also include feverfew in their active ingredients so some shopping around in your local store may yield results.

Passion Flower

Passionflower (Passiflora) has gained a lot of respect in herbal medicine as providing a potential cure for various ailments. Among its uses, passionflower shows strong signs of combating migraines and headaches as well as lowering anxiety levels and works effectively as an anti-inflammatory. This combination means that passionflower extracts can help to prevent the throbbing sensation in your head associated with cluster headaches and migraines.

Peppermint

Peppermint has several advantages as a headache and migraine cure. It tastes and smells pleasant and is

easily obtainable. Clinical tests have also shown excellent results for many patients. Peppermint is best

used as an essential oil but you should avoid its consumption if you have acid indigestion or other digestive  complaints. Peppermint has been widely recognized as a headache cure for many hundreds of years but has  also been used as a coolant and a mild relaxant.

Gingko

Gingko biloba

Gingko biloba (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Who hasn’t heard of Gingko Biloba and its various uses as an herbal remedy? As well as being used to help alleviate headaches it is also popular as an antidepressant and to improve memory and alertness. This unique combination of uses has made it extremely popular in health supplements and products for some  years now. Many Gingko supplements are available that also contain peppermint, cayenne and other beneficial plants and herbs. Superstores and health stores have a stock of different Gingko products available so choose wisely and, if necessary, experiment until you find the perfect remedy for you.

Fundamentals of Happiness

Originally written: http://www.healthy-holistic-living.com

How can we find happiness? Is there a tangible path to happiness or is it some illusive feeling that comes and goes according to what happens around us? According to the Dalai Lama, happiness can be cultivated like all other things. The structure of the human brain is optimally designed to allow us to affect our behaviors, personality and patterns. Ultimately giving d5us the power to lead either unhappy or unfulfilled lives or to live inspired, happy full lives. The choice is ours.

“The systematic training of the mind- the cultivation of happiness, the genuine inner transformation by deliberately selecting and focusing on positive mental states and challenging negative mental states – is possible because of the very structure and function of the brain. We are born with brains that are genetically hardwired with certain instinctual behavior patterns; we are predisposed mentally, emotionally, and physically to respond to our environment in ways that enable us to survive.

These basic sets of instructions are encoded in countless innate nerve cell activation patterns, specific combinations of brain cells fire in response to a given event experience or d1thought. But the wiring in our brains is not static, not irrevocably fixed. Our brains are also adaptable. Neuroscientists have documented the fact that the brain can design new patterns, new combinations of nerve cells and neurotransmitters (chemicals that transmit messages between nerve cells) in response to new input. In fact, our brains are malleable, ever changing, reconfiguring their wiring according to new thoughts and experiences. And as a result of learning the function of individual neurons themselves change, allowing electrical signals to travel along them more readily. Scientists call the brain’s inherent capacity to change “plasticity.”

Simply put we may not be able to alter existing neuropath ways, but we can develop new patterns or neuropath ways that are stronger and therefore become the dominant pattern.

“This is known as the practice of “Dharma.” This is the constant battle within of replacing previous negative conditioning or habituation with new positive conditioning.”

No matter what activity or practice we are perusing there is not anything that isn’t made easier through constant familiarity and training. Through training, we can change; we can transform ourselves.”

So I guess the saying practice makes perfect is true? So, what do you practice to cultivate happiness?d4

OK you’re not going to like this because you have heard it all before but here it goes!!

1. “Make a Conscious Choice To Be Happy”

Most things in life require that we make a conscious, deliberate choice to pursue them or they remain only an allusive dream just outside of our reach. Acknowledge you are not happy with your current self, be honest with yourself and others. Commit from this day forward to live a happy, fulfilled life.

2. “Cultivate a Sense of Connection With Yourself and Others”d2

Foster friendships; we are here to experience all the joy the world has to offer and, without other people to share the experience with, we would not have the fulfillment and joy that we all desire. Let people in to your core to share in your vulnerability and your growth.

3. Focus on Forgiveness of Yourself and Others”

Forgiveness is not always easy but the more we say the words “I am sorry” the easier and more natural they become. It does not take away from who we are as a person, to forgive it is what makes us complete.

4. “Cultivate Gratitude”

Be grateful for every moment you have: the good, the bad and the boring. Each moment is precious and provides us with a path to wholeness. Embrace each experience and say thanks at the end of each day for all that you have, all that you experienced and all the opportunities you will create.

5. “Counteract Negative Thoughts and Feelings”

This requires a conscious effort on your part to acknowledge negative thoughts and to replace them with positive feelings. To build positive neuropath ways that will dominate your thinking requires constant practice. If you have a tendency to be negative, it simply means you have focused on negative feelings or have practiced being negative more than positive. It is that simple! Practice positive feelings!

6. “Shift your Focus”

Focus only on YOU. Accept the fact that you cannot change another human being. And in fact, that is not your job or your place. You can only change yourself. Shift your focus to what it is you are doing and feeling. You may be surprised that you are in fact doing some of the same things that you are criticizing others for doing.

7. “Engage in Meaningful Activities”

If your life is filled with mundane, unsatisfying activities, attaining happiness will be an uphill battle. Are you living an inspired life? Are you engaging in activities that you desire, that make you happy? Engaging in activities that have meaning to your true, authentic self brings you tremendous joy. Find out what is meaningful to you and pursue those activities.

8. “Cultivate physical, Mental and Spiritual Health”d3

We are physical beings living in a physical world. We need to tend to our bodies, our minds as well as our spirits. Eating right, exercising and practicing our spiritual beliefs on a daily basis with help cultivate the seeds of happiness.

9. “Pursue Pleasure”

Do things that bring you total JOY. Things that inspire you, please you, and provide you with a boundless sense of love and joy. We all know that feeling, we just need to make it a

priority to pursue pleasure!

7 Steps to Happiness
We are human and we require structure and repetition to alter our behaviors and ultimately alter our lives. Having steps to support your goals is essential.

1. Meditation or Prayer

Find a meditation that works for you and practice it everyday! It is that simple. Give yourself the time to release everything, to be in the moment change your life.

2. Movement

No matter what your situation or condition you must move your body! We are human and our bodies are required to be fluid to function properly. This functioning is not limited to the physical self it also influences your mental health and spiritual health. Remember we are a whole being.

3. Sleep

Proper sleep is essential for our physical and mental well-being. It is our time to regenerate and recover from the experiences of the day. Without the proper sleep your body will be running on a constant deficit and will always be compromised. Thus making it all that more difficult to obtain happiness and wellbeing.

4. Proper Nutrition

As with exercise, we must acknowledge we are human beings with basic needs to function properly. Eating right will provide you with the optimum resources necessary to attain your physical, mental and spiritual goals.

5. Breathing

Simple enough but most of us do not breathe deeply enough to engage our bodies and provide our cells with all the necessary nutrients to function properly. Practice deep breathing throughout the day whenever you remember.

6. Humor

Humor ultimately is the best medicine. From a physical perspective it releases endorphins in our body, which makes us feel better, and it releases pent up emotions that if not released become toxic to our body. The more we can laugh at ourselves the healthier and happier we will be.

7. Practice, Practice, Practice

The excerpts above are from one of my favorite books The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living by His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler MD.

Funny enough, it really doesn’t matter what your situation is, the rules are the same read Tools for Dealing with a Chronic Illness to learn more about the tools and techniques you can use to live a happy and fulfilled life.

Take the conscious road to authentic power!!!

Osteoporosis: The silent disease and natural ways of possible prevention

Osteoporosis

It is Often referred to as the “silent disease,” osteoporosis usually progresses without obvious signs or symptoms until the first fracture occurs. Osteoporosis frequently strikes women after their  enopause phase, mainly because of the decline in levels of the hormone estrogen which is important for the  calcification of bones. When estrogen levels drop, the ability to absorb and assimilate dietary calcium is often reduced. It can also occur in men as a result of delayed puberty, inadequate calcium intake,  smoking, excessive alcohol consumption or medications, such as glucocorticoids in addition to the declined levels of estrogen which come with the progress of age.

There are hormones such as estrogen , parathyroid and vitamin D which are all very essential for bone formation and calcification and hence all three should be in balance. There are also genetic factors that seem to have an effect on the bones density, which mainly effect vitamin D, or genetic mutation that controls production of collagen matrix which is essential for bones formation. The normal process of bone formation and bone destruction takes place normally within the human body. Until a healthy person is around 40, the process of breaking down and building up bones is in balance. Afterwards and as the age progresses one needs to be more careful. One of the main factors affecting the levels of bone formation is the high level of estrogen we have within our bodies. For example, during the women’s menopause phase, the estrogen levels drop down significantly; increasing the risk of osteoporosis and the susceptibility for bone fracture as well. Therefore, Women unfortunately are more likely to suffer an earlier osteoporosis compared to men as men’s estrogen levels drop gradually as they get older whereas women’s drop suddenly with menopause.

Balanced state Progress of age
In the US, some 40% of women and 13% of men may sustain a fracture after age 50. Calcium, especially from milk products, has been universally recommended as the one main element needed to reduce the risk of fractures. However, late studies have suggested that this may be a wrong approach as there are more fractures in regions that consume milk

English: Hajdu-Cheney Syndrome : acro-osteolys...

English: Hajdu-Cheney Syndrome : acro-osteolysis of all distal phalanges, platybasia, thickened occipital bone, open sutures, and wormian bones. This picture was used in the following article: “Truncating mutations in the last exon of NOTCH2 cause a rare skeletal disorder with osteoporosis.” Isidor B. & al. Nat Genet. 2011 Mar 6. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21378989 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

products (US, Great Britain, Canada, Northern Europe), than in those that don’t (traditional Africa, China). There was a study conducted at Harvest on 78,000 nurses who have been drinking milk regularly ( like twice a day) for the past 12 years and these people had a much higher risk of hip fracture than those who drink a glass of milk a week or less.

The explanation for this lies in understanding more the structure and function of bones. At this time, most people, including health professionals, think bone=calcium. But things are a bit more tricky here.

Physiologically, bones are composed of calcium phosphate salts (65%) for the purpose of hardness, and a collagen matrix (35%), for the purpose of flexibility. If we place a bone in an acid bath and all the calcium is removed from it, leaving just the collagen matrix, when exposed to stress it will bend, however it will not break. On the other hand, if the collagen matrix is removed and all that remains are the calcium salts, when exposed to stress it will break.

In other simple words: a bone with zero calcium will bend, not break, whereas a high calcium/low collagen matrix bone would break easily. This is why excess calcium can indeed increase the risk of fracture because that increase does not mean that the collagen matrix is also increased; which is more vital for healthy formation of bones.

Milk contains very high levels of phosphate that it actually leaches calcium out of the bones. In addition to that milk had 8 times the amount of calcium compared to magnesium which is not a balanced ratio. High calcium levels with not enough magnesium levels will prevent the absorption of magnesium which is vital for moving calcium into the bones.

A 2:1 ratio or better calcium than magnesium is more recommended. However, the ratio in milk would cause a magnesium deficiency in the body. When the ratio is not balanced, calcium will be pulled from the bones and this calcium is often deposited in the soft tissues; where it may later cause arthritis.

We often check for calcium levels during menopause through our regular blood tests. Usually the doctor prescribes high doses of calcium during that phase either based on the blood test findings or as a preventive way of future calcium declines. However, the calcium levels which are derived through the blood tests give us an idea about the calcium levels present in the blood which are different than the ones present in the bones. In other words, a person may have normal levels of blood calcium but that does not deny the fact that the calcium

In addition to the usual centers of ossificati...

In addition to the usual centers of ossification of the cranium, others may occur, giving rise to irregular isolated bones termed sutural or Wormian bones. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

levels of his bones have gone down due to declined levels of estrogen, for instance.

In a case as such, giving calcium tablets is not as accurate as the majority thought it would be; due to the fact that too much calcium may not be calcified by the bones which may lead to osteomalacia.

Primary and secondary osteoporosis

Osteoporosis can be further characterized as either primary or secondary. Primary osteoporosis can occur in both genders at all ages but often follows menopause in women and occurs later in life in men. It is associated with fractures that occur when the vertebrae compresses together causing a collapse of the spine, along with fractures of the hip, wrist , forearm caused by minor accidents or falls. A further type of primary osteoporosis affects both men and women and is mainly associated with leg and spinal fractures. The determining factor for the existence of osteoporosis both types is the amount of calcium left in the skeleton and whether it places a person at risk for fracture or not.

In contrast, secondary osteoporosis is a result of medications, other conditions, or diseases. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, certain people are more likely to
develop osteoporosis than others. Known risk factors are listed below:

  • Gender Women – have less bone tissue and lose bone more rapidly than men because of the changes involved in menopause.
  • Age – One in two women and one in four men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in her/his remaining lifetime.
  • Race  – Osteoporosis poses a greater threat to Caucasian and Asian women, although African American and Hispanic women are also at risk.
  • Body type – Women who are small-boned or thin are more susceptible to osteoporosis.
  • Genetics – If a parent or sibling had osteoporosis, your likelihood for developing the disease is increased.
  • Lifestyle – Low calcium intake (even as a child) and a sedentary lifestyle contribute to the development of osteoporosis.

    Fußskelett

    Fußskelett (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

  • Smoking, caffeine and alcohol abuse.
  • Vitamin D deficiency.

Soft drinks should be avoided due to their phosphorus content. Phosphorus is very acidic; it picks up calcium and takes it out of the body which in turn lowers the blood calcium levels. For the body to compensate and balance out the calcium levels, it starts pulling calcium out of the bones which leads to osteoporosis.

  • Medication – some drugs, especially steroids and those used for rheumatoid arthritis and gastrointestinal problems, chemotherapy and anti convulsions, have side effects which can cause bone damage.
  • Prior fracture – Breaking a bone in adulthood, especially after minor trauma.
  • Abnormal absence of menstrual periods (amenorrhea).

Conclusion and natural ways of possible prevention:
One of the best ways to cope with menopause and osteopania/ osteoporosis is to stimulate the estrogen within the body via natural ways, (herbs, food and exercise) and that in turn will maintain the balance between the bone destruction & bone formation. The following foods are best avoided because they cause an acid condition that leaches minerals out of the bones:
refined sugars, honey, and white flour, including pasta, white bread, muffins, and of course baked flour desserts.

Herbs which contain a good source of estrogen:
Wild yam, red clover, isoflavones, Agnus castus, black cohosh, dandelion ( for liver detoxifying to help achieving a balance within the body), angelica sinensis which is good for problems occurring due to estrogen deficiency, alfalfa, evening primrose.

Foods and herbs that are good sources of calcium:

Broccoli, green leafy vegetables, nuts, red clover, raspberry, oat straw, dandelion, fortified tofu, almonds, canned salmon, shrimps.

How Holistic Living is Related to Spirituality? Written by Yogi Marlon

My personal thoughts on how to maintain a healthy existence are far from mainstream. Living how nature has intended us to live is my supreme guideline and thankfully, a rapidly growing phenomenon for many. I want to share with you the knowledge I have been accumulating since I was a very young child, and how I have integrated that knowledge into my personal lifestyle. Please take my ideas as intended. They are my educated opinions, not gospel or medical advice.

Here in Holistic Living, I will continually present ideas for you to consider adopting into your own lifestyle as well as the means to do it. That change can range from a shift in your

thought pattern, or the use of a particular item. In the case of material goods, I encourage you to look for the items yourself. Wherever I am able, I will provide the ability for you to order those items conveniently, on site. Going forward, I am making it my job to find more of these items see shopping that can be delivered right to your door. Living healthily should after all, be easy!

“How Holistic Living is Related to Spirituality”

This section evolved from a conversation I had at one of my most loyal student’s office, only months after we met. After a long meeting with her and her boss concerning the concept of what is now this site, she volunteered to walk me down to my car. I knew something was about to transpire, but I do not believe either of us knew what then.

After a few minutes of closing discussion about the meeting, Theresa politely asked if I would tell her my age. Clearly shocked when I did, she remarked that I was only a year or two younger than she was, and yet I looked about a decade younger. I assumed she would know what I meant when I wryly said that I had “yoga-ed my whole life”, but her expression assured me she hadn’t a clue where I was going.

So I explained to her as I will now explain to you, all the things I have done in my life, not expressly to remain youthful looking, but to retain my shakti, chi, or life force energy. For me all these things are common sense, but the more I live, the more I realize for many people my suggestions for a healthy lifestyle are–well, esoteric.

If you want scientific evidence that these things actually do work, I’m sorry, but you will have to dig that up yourself. Although I am ravenous about collecting information on how to live healthily, I operate firstly from instinct and inspiration on all matters in my life. Therefore, these ideas are merely a description of what I have decided is right living for me. I cannot legally prescribe them for you or anyone. I am simply offering you an insight into my lifestyle. Surely, it has created health, clarity, happiness and sensitivity for me. I think you understand …

My Habits
OK, so Theresa wanted to know more. I said, “Look, Theresa, there are many things you do on a daily basis, that I have eliminated from my life. Whenever possible,
I do not:
  • breathe re-circulated air, as in an office building

  • sit under florescent lights, as in an office building.
  • eat junk food for lunch and wash it down with a soda.
  • drink out of Styrofoam, or eat off plastic plates and I especially do not eat with plastic utensils.
  • drink much liquid with meals, especially iced drinks or liquor.
  • eat chemical preservatives of any kind. That means absolutely no mono sodium glutamate (MSG), or nitrates, or hormone or antibiotic fed animals.
  • take prescription drugs especially antibiotics.
  • eat foods made with hydrogenated oil, especially margarine or other butter substitutes.
  • ingest any of the sugar substitutes, and very little processed, white sugar
  • eat unripe or waxed vegetables and fruits
  • eat bleached white flour
  • consume iradiated vegetables or spices
  • eat when I am not hungry
  • drink when I am not thirsty
  • breathe or use air fresheners (i.e. Many automatic room deodorizers in restaurant restrooms are designed to anaesthetize your sense of smell by coating the little hairs in your nose with an thin, airborne emollient film that deadens the olfactory sense for up to one hour! Not my idea of an appetizer!)
  • use bug repellant or extermination fluid on my skin or in the house/office
  • sitin front of a computer that emits negative electromagnetic impulses (EMI’s)
  • use poor quality sunglasses
  • use synthetic eye drops made to reduce redness
  • breathe fumes from chemicals, including: paint, paint thinner, lye, varnish, lacquer, formaldehyde, cigarettes, magic markers, gasoline, instant glue, acrylic nails, hair dresser’s chemicals, etc., etc. Simple rule: if it stinks, get out of it!
  • wear commercial perfume
  • use commercial sunscreens ,especially those containing PABA, and those that do not filter out UVB and UVC rays
  • use perfumed or dyed laundry detergent
  • use fabric softener
  • use perfumed, bleached or synthetic (usually rayon) tampons.

I do:
  • work under natural light (sunlight), or full spectrum light bulbs.
  • have plants in the room where I work during the day, and have fresh air from an open window, or use an air purifier when needed.
  • protect myself from negative electromagnetic impulses.

  • use unheated extra virgin olive oil liberally and butter or ghee sparingly.
  • eat local and in-season fruits and vegetables as close to the day it was picked as possible.
  • Shop in order of preference at the weekly farmer’s market, at the health food supermarket. I use the regular supermarket only for emergencies.
  • eat free-range, hormone-free meats, dairy, and poultry.
  • use unprocessed honey in the winter and a natural sugar like turbinado, sucrose, or fructose in the summer.
  • eat whole grain bread.
  • scrape my tongue every morning with a tongue scraper, not my toothbrush, to remove toxins or ama that accumulate there overnight.
  • use natural, saccharine-free, flouride-free toothpaste like Thom’s of Maine brand.

  • burn stick of Nag Champa incense to relax
  • wear natural fibers: cotton, silk, linen, & wool.
  • meditate.
  • practice Pranayama.
  • yoga postures
  • pray
  • give people warm smiles for no reason at all
  • appreciate beauty as a materialistic expression of love
  • think of both the past and future daily, yet remain mostly in the present.
  • wish the best for all those I know and all those I do not know by extending an energetic generosity to them.
How to Integrate
So that is a lot. You may want to try incorporating these, one at a time, starting with the ones that seem easy to you. Remember it is a process. If you keep at it, soon it will become second nature, and you will start to spot ways of your own to detoxify your life.
How It Works
The benefit for me is that my senses are keener. That makes life more sensuous. I know for a fact that I see more, hear more and feel more than most people as a result of my efforts. It is not until you take some of these very ordinary toxins out of your life that you will realize what you have been missing. It is actually very simple. My understanding is that because our bodies work continually to remove these toxins, we may not have the energy left to do all the things unnecessary to survival. That is actually the brilliance of our being. Our bodies automatically take care of what is absolutely needed first, then what is preferred, then it gets around to the fineries such as:
  • growing lustrous hair,
  • growing smooth, even nails
  • having glowing skin,
  • seeing very small or far objects clearly,
  • hearing delicate sounds,
  • etc …

Next our energy goes to our mind. The more energy we have available, the more clarity in thinking. (By this I do not refer to the common over-tired, hyper, type A energy that is so common. That is actually a Vata imbalance. see doshas.)

Why bother?

When all the basic needs of the body are met, and clarity of the mind is established, awareness of the spirit becomes more easily accessible. So that is the point of all this. Simply put, a sound body and clear, calm mind is fertile ground for the evolvement of the spirit. In the process we:

  • feel better, life is fuller and more alive
  • think better
  • can be more productive
  • can be more compassionate, understanding and loving
  • evolve as a species and as individual souls
What can we do?
If this seems (see My habits) like a lot to do, you are right. Our world culture’s manufacturing, over-refinements of goods, hyper-processing of food, creation of petroleum laden, artificial environments are not very supportive of our well being. When we see that toxic products and conditions are present, we need to demand better from:
  • stores we shop in
  • our mangers at work
  • our farmers
  • the pharmaceutical companies
  • chemical companies
  • energy companies
  • manufacturers
  • our governments
  • the FDA
  • builders
  • our friends, relatives and spouses, & teachers.
Remember, in our society your voice is often heard by how you spend your dollars. If we continue to consume substandard goods, they will continue to make them. We have the power to change all of this, if we are brave enough to speak up.

Nature is, as God created it, a perfect system. It is supportive to our needs. That is why getting back to nature is so essential to your well-being and spiritual evolvement. Our challenge is to be in congruency with it.

Good luck! Good health and happiness to you!

What is an allergy?

What is an allergy?

Allergy is an immune response seen in an individual when he/she is exposed to certain substances which are normally harmless in the environment. Allergies are of different types:

Allergy starter

Allergy starter (Photo credit: gibsonsgolfer)

Allergy starter (Photo credit: gibsonsgolfer)

  • The type seen when a person is exposed to environmental irritants like smoke, smog, dust particles, pollen grains, smell of some substance, even changes in the environment like hot or cold weather can trigger intense allergic reaction.
  • Some people show allergic reactions when they eat something. For example people show allergy to peanuts, coffee or different food proteins.
  • Some allergies are seen when exposed to some toxic substance e.g. when a wasp bites a person, that area gets red and swollen.
  • Repeat usage of some medicines or repeated use of injections can cause allergies.

Whenever an allergic substance gets entry into the body, the body responds by increasing the production of anti-bodies i.e. IgE anti-bodies. It’s a protective mechanism which helps body get rid of the allergen. As a side effect, this immune reaction trigger several symptoms of allergy like:

  • Running nose and eyes.
  • Coughing and sneezing.
  • Swelling of affecting area.
  • Triggering of pain.
  • A generalized feeling of malaise.
  • Itching at the site of infection.

Natural remedies for allergies:

Luckily, there are several natural remedies for allergies which you can use to get rid of the condition. All these remedies suppress the signs and symptoms of allergies and make your immune system strong enough to eliminate the causative agent. Such remedies include:

Normal saline solution:

  • It is one of the most effective natural remedies for allergies, especially for the irritation of nose and respiratory track. Saline solution (water + salt) is easily available in a variety of preparations like nasal sprays or nasal drops. Irrigating your nose with this solution helps suppress allergy in following ways:
    • First, it helps wash away the irritant logged in the respiratory track.
    • Second, it washes away the cells causing inflammation and irritation (mast cells) and anti-bodies produced by them.
    • Saline solution, in general, has a soothing effect on the nose and respiratory passage.

Honey:
It’s one of the most widely used natural remedy for irritation. Honey is known for its soothing effect when used for treating sore throat. Honey contains a small of pollen in it. When this pollen enters into the body, it alarms the immune system to produce anti-bodies. But, these anti-bodies are not high enough to produce symptoms of allergy. Over the longer run, these anti-bodies start to accumulate into the blood of that individual. Now, if the person is exposed to the pollens, these anti-bodies eliminate the irritant without even producing significant symptoms of

allergy.
Applying honey over bee’s sting also helps limit the allergic reaction and helps lessen the pain.

Apple cider vinegar:
It’s another effective natural remedy for allergies. Apple cider vinegar helps reduce allergy in two ways:

  • The production of mucous increases during allergy. It causes the blockade of respiratory track producing symptoms like coughing and sneezing. Apple cider vinegar helps reduce the production of mucous.
  • Lymphatic system is a protective system of the body which helps get rid of the foreign particle making way to the body. It helps strengthen the lymphatic system, making it powerful enough to fight against the irritant.

Quercetin:
It’s a bioflavonoid naturally present in foods like broccoli and citrus fruits. Several supplements are also available. Using it for about 4-6 weeks before the allergy season helps reduce allergy. Quercetin, however, is not advised to pregnant females. It produces its anti-allergy effect because of following reasons:

  • Mast cells are the basic culprit for producing allergy. When these cells are exposed to irritants, their cell walls burst releasing several mediators of inflammation and pain. Quercetin helps stabilize the membrane of mast cells.
  • It is a natural anti-oxidant, preventing the membrane damage, and inflammation in return, caused by allergens.

Nettle leaf:
You can use these leaves by making a tea or using the capsule preparations available in the market. You can make a refreshing tea by mixing it with other herbs like peppermint leaves and raspberry leaves. It contains a natural anti-histamine substance which not only limits the release of histamine but also helps reduce the adverse effects produced by histamine release.

Peppermint tea:
You can make peppermint tea for curing you allergies. Take some peppermint leaves and boil them in water. Filter the water, let it cool and sweeten it if required. Use this tea 2-3 times in allergy season for maximum results. Peppermint helps relieve allergies because:

  • It is a decongestant and helps open the airway. This way, it helps cure problems like coughing, sneezing and nasal irritation.
  • It contains substances that have anti-histamine action.
  • It has strong anti-bacterial and thus helps reduce the infection caused by bacteria.

Steaming of face:
It’s a common home remedy for allergy. It helps open the air ways and helps clear the irritants. Take 1-2 liters of water and heat it till it boils. Drape a towel over your head and breathe the vapors of water for 5-10 minutes.

Gargling:
Gargling is an effective remedy for allergies characterized by throat pain and irritation during speaking and swallowing. Take 1-2 cups of water and boil it till it becomes Luke warm. Add a pinch of common salt and gargle with this mixture. Repeat the process 1-2 times each day till the pain goes away.

Eucalyptus oil:
It produces its anti-allergy effects when you inhale it by adding it in boiling water. It’s a decongestant and anti-inflammatory substance which helps abate the symptoms of allergy.

Diet changes:
Some people show allergic response when they eat some food. So, keep following things in mind before eating something.

  • Minimize, or ideally give away, the consumption of the food stuff which triggers allergy.
  • Use less spices in your food.
  • Use plant oils for cooking purposes.
  • Try to avoid canned and processed food. Eat fresh and healthy food.

How Does Reflexology Work?

This article brought you us by the Universal College of Reflexology

How Does Reflexology Work?

Reflexology, in common with other complementary therapies, is trying to gain scientific credibility in order to be accepted by the mainstream medical profession. Part of this process involves explaining how Reflexology works. Listed below are some of the common theories of how Reflexology works. Many of the theories are not exclusive to Reflexology, and can be applied to a number of other therapies.

The Nerve Impulse Theory
When pressure is applied to the foot, or any other organ in the body, afferent neurons conduct the message to ganglia or groups of neurons outside the spinal cord. Normally, messages pass

from the ganglia to the spinal cord then up to the brain for interpretation. Motor nerves than carry responses down the spinal cord, out to the ganglia then on to the appropriate muscles for activity.

The electrical impulse theory says that for a reason, as yet unexplained, messages from the feet reaching the ganglia connect up with the messages going to muscles, so that working the feet has direct action on bodily organs. This explains why Reflexology zones are vertical, with pressure on one side of the foot affecting organs on the same side of the body. The theory can also be used to explain how Reflexology benefits people with paralysis due to severing of the spinal cord.

The electrical impulse theory has much in common with the reflex arc, a well-known physiological phenomenon. Examples of involuntary reflexes include blinking, pupil contraction to light, knee and ankle jerks. The doctor tapping the bottom of the knee with a rubber hammer so that the leg shoots up is checking that the reflex arc is working, as an indication of proper neurological functioning. The reflex arc relies on nerve synapses or connections between sensory nerves and motor nerves in the spinal cord so that the activity takes place a split second before the brain is told about it, or can initiate it itself.

Gate Control Theory
A theory of pain is the gate-control theory. This theory says that pain receptors in the spinal cord regulating the amount of pain that can pass up to the brain. Once all the receptors are full, the ‘gate’ shuts, stopping further pain messages going up to the brain. This limits the amount of pain we feel.

The Placebo Effect
Many studies have indicated that patients have benefited from medication and surgery when they have in fact been receiving a placebo. Likewise, patients have suffered side effects from inert substances taken as a placebo. Trust in the therapist is an essential component of the effect as is the therapists’ confidence in what they are doing. Personality type is no indication as to reaction to a placebo. Perhaps the reason that Reflexology works is because of a placebo effect and the type of treatment is not as important as the relationship between therapist and client.

Impeded and Unimpeded Energy Flow Theory
This theory suggests that the ground pulsates with positive and negative electrical energy charges that are picked up by positive and negative receptors on the feet. The energy receptors in the feet are a part of the nervous system. In the healthy person, the charges and energy from the earth pass freely into the nervous system.

If the positive and negative charges in the feet are not in contact with the earth, due to congestion in the feet or particles impeding passage, they cannot pick up the earth charges as effectively and energy flow is impeded.

Reflexology can unblock the pathways allowing the electrical terminals in the feet to touch the ground again so that energy can flow freely

again.

It is now thought that modern systems of pain relief e.g. TENS machines, work by mildly stimulating the nerve pathways. All the receptors are filled, the gates shut and severe pain stimuli cannot be passed up the spinal cord to the brain. It has been hypothesized that Reflexology works in the same way as a TENS machine.

The Relaxation Effect
It is known that much illness originates from stress and tension in the body. It can be theorized that anything that relieves stress and tension and promotes deep relaxation will enable systems and organs in the body to work much more effectively. This theory suggest that Reflexology is very restful and relaxing, and therefore alleviates and helps prevent illness.

Subtle Energy/Zone/Meridian Theories
Subtle energy is a life force that animates the physical body. It is absorbed from the universe in general and from the air around us in particular when we breathe, touch or eat and it can be channeled into the body by healers. Zone theories have been around for several centuries, meridian theories for a lot longer. Both believe that subtle energy flows through the body in channels

and that disruption to this energy flow results in ill health. Energy may stagnate, become blocked, or speed up. Blockages may be caused by stress, pain, injury and trauma or by a lack of exercise, amongst other reasons. The role of the therapist is to work on the areas of disrupted energy to restore a normal flow. See Zone Theory article for more details

The Holographic Principle
At a highly symbolic level, the holographic principle that “every piece contains the whole” can be seen in the cellular structure of all living bodies. Scientific discoveries in the world of cellular biology, have demonstrated that every cell contains a copy of the master DNA blueprint, with enough information to make an entire human body from scratch. The fact that every cell within the human body contains the information to create an entire duplicate body mirrors the holographic principle (see article “Understanding the Holographic Principle” ) whereby every piece contains the information of the whole.

This holographic principle when extended to the human body as a whole and Reflexology in particular may be applied like this. Parts of the body such as the hands, ears, and feet when stimulated affect the body as a whole. In that each of these parts carries the picture of the whole body, and so homeostasis or a dynamic state of balance can be achieved by stimulating the

reflexes in any one of these parts.

Electro-Magnetic Theories of Healing
A number of slightly different theories have much in common. It is known that all matter, including human cells, vibrate at certain rates. The brain in particular has recognized waves that can be detected on Electroencephalograms (EEGs). Alpha waves (8 – 13Hz cycles per second) are indicative of deep relaxation. It is also known that the earth is vibrating at a regular rate, in a frequency band known as Schumann Resonance, and that this rate is similar to that of Alpha waves. It can be postulated that the person whose cells vibrate at an alpha rhythm is in harmony with their surrounding and therefore likely to be in a positive state of health.

It is theorized that the brain is the link between the earth’s vibrations and our bodily vibrations. Electromagnetic messages are created in the brain as it oscillates between positive and negative polarities. It is also known that the human body contains iron (in red blood cells), dissolved electrolytes (sodium, chloride and potassium bicarbonate, in blood plasma), proteins (which act as semiconductors) and water, and therefore generates a bio-magnetic field. To send rapid messages the brain works like a radio transmitter/receiver, sending and receiving electro-magnetic signals directly to and from our body cells to regulate their vibrational frequency . The brain also uses the much slower nervous and circulatory systems to pass chemical and electro-magnetic messages to and from cells to regulate vibrational frequency.

Problems can arise in two ways. Firstly, under certain conditions the electrical messages from the brain can become blocked or distorted like a radio not quite tuned into a station. With damage e.g. caused by stress, the pairs of electrons spin in the same rather than in opposite directions, distorting the signal and causing cells to malfunction. Secondly, cells can vibrate at less than optimum frequency due to injury, emotional trauma or a decreased magnetic field. Degenerative diseases, memory loss and conditions such as ME have all been associated with magnetic field

deficiency.

Healing focuses on these two areas. Simultaneous EEG recordings (measuring brain electrical activity) often show that a client’s EEG pattern comes into synchrony with those of the healer during a healing session indicating sympathetic resonance is taking place. Studies have shown that the brain waves generated by healers are often Alpha waves. It is theorized that the healer, having tuned the client into the same wave length as themselves, can retune the messages to the correct frequency, or replace missing signals with their own signals restoring the Alpha wave link between brain and cells. In developing a relaxed alpha state prior to healing, the healer also taps into the earth’s vibrational energy to channel healing from outside through to the cells.

Healers monitored by electrometers have generated fluctuating surges of low frequency body potential of between 0.3 Hz and 30 Hz, with most activity in the range 7Hz. In some healers, up to 60 Hz of potential difference was found between the head/hands and the feet. In electrical terms the healer’s body becomes a LF bio-electric dipole antenna. It is known that 2 Hz can regenerate nerve tissue, 7 Hz can trigger bone growth, 10 Hz can heal ligaments whilst 15-72 Hz can decrease skin necrosis and generate capillary formation.

Magnetometers have measured palmar biomagnetic fields 1000 times greater than those of the heart and a million times greater than those of the brain. In

63

63 (Photo credit: barnism)

everyday life, palmer bio-magnetism is borderline detectability. The theory can explain why healers often feel tingling in their hands during a treatment. Areas of heat or blockage that healers sometimes say that they can feel on the body may be electrical resistance at the cellular or tissue level. It is also theorized that the healer’s sweeping or scanning of the body during healing could re-magnetize the blood and stimulate the bio-magnetic fields of the body. The circulatory system can then transport healing energy around the body in blood and plasma to restore correct vibrations.

Evidence in support of a healing energy theory have included accelerated tissue healing and bone repair beyond chance probability. Experiments with nerve cells in petri dishes have shown that energy generated by healers can cause impulses to travel along these nerve cells and jump between the synapses or gaps between cells from one nerve to another. Research has shown that brain cells contain millions of crystals suggesting that the brain acts like a radio transmitter/receiver.

Endorphin Release Theories
Endorphins are the body’s natural opiates or painkillers, with actions similar to that of morphine. These are stimulated by pain, and serve to reduce the amount of pain that we feel by inhibiting

English: Foot reflexology is a "pressure ...

the activity of a neurotransmitter called substance P, that is thought to transmit pain. It is theorized that a Reflexology treatment stimulates the release of endorphins to help ease pain and to give the body the same natural elevation in mood as strong painkillers.

Facilitation Theory
This school of thought believes that the patient does their own healing when and if they are ready, regardless of the therapist or the type of therapy. The role of the therapist is to facilitate the process.

The Feet as a ‘U’ Bend Theory
In a plumbing system, the ‘U’ bend traps all the debris that passes through the sink, toilet or wash basin. With time, unless proprietary cleaners are used, the bend becomes clogged and waste water cannot flow away properly. The feet are the furthest point in the circulatory system from the heart. They are also the part of the body where the effect of gravity is greatest, and are in effect, the “U’ bend of the body. It is theorized that calcium, uric acid and lymphatic deposits in the blood accumulate in the feet interfering with the normal circulation of blood and lymph. Reflexology breaks up and moves these deposits, thus improving blood and lymph circulation.

Conclusion
Maybe Reflexology works because it is a combination of all of the above. At this point in time we just don’t know. Whilst it is important for the credibility of Reflexology to explain how it works, it may be many years before the scientific capability is available to test some of the theories, if at all. The effect of Reflexology may be due to an isolated factor, or due to a combination of factors. The important point to bear in mind in the meantime, is that regardless of how and why it works, Reflexology does work and brings benefit to thousand of people.
